Crowns

A crown is used to entirely cover or "cap" a damaged tooth. Besides strengthening a damaged tooth, a crown can be used to improve its appearance, shape or alignment. Porcelain or ceramic crowns can be matched to the color of your natural teeth. Other materials include gold and metal alloys, acrylic and ceramic. These alloys are generally stronger than porcelain and may be recommended for back teeth. Porcelain bonded to a metal shell is often used because it is both strong and attractive.

A crown is done in two appointments. At the first appointment Dr. Chen will prep your existing tooth for a crown to fit onto. This may include placing a filling called a build-up. An impression is taken to send to the lab and you leave the office with a temporary crown that Dr. Chen will make for you. Three to four weeks later you come in for the second appointment. Dr. Chen will remove the temporary crown and permanently cement your crown that was fabricated at the lab.

Implant Crowns

Single Tooth Replacement: Immediately (at the same time an implant is placed) or after a period of healing, an abutment is attached to the implant. This is a device that “abuts” or joins the implant to a tooth form called a crown, which replaces the tooth part you see in the mouth. It will hold a custom-made crown that the dental laboratory will fabricate and match to your existing teeth. The custom crown is cemented or screwed onto the abutment to permanently keep it in place. Once the crown is in place, it should be indistinguishable from your natural teeth.
