Your teeth are one of the most important structures in your body. You depend on them to obtain proper nutrition. If you lose one or more teeth, extensive repairs and prosthetics may be required to prevent shifting of your teeth and bone loss.
Previously, diseased teeth or those with pulp injuries were routinely removed. However, modern root canal treatment provides dentists with a way to save injured teeth and preserve the function and integrity of the surrounding tooth and mouth structures. Dr. Chen of Auburn Family Dental offers professional root canal (endodontic) treatment that enables you to save your tooth and avoid the cascading effects that are likely to occur following tooth loss. Our office serves patients in Lewiston, Auburn, and throughout all of Oxford and Androscoggin County, Maine.
The pulp within your teeth is a soft tissue containing blood vessels, connective tissue, and highly sensitive nerves. It extends from the tooth’s crown all the way down into the tip of the root within the jawbone. Pulp that is injured or diseased is typically incapable of healing itself and may die. Deep cavities and cracked teeth are the two most common causes of pulp damage. These conditions allow bacteria to enter the pulp chamber, creating infections that antibiotics generally cannot reach.
When an infection occurs within the pulp of a tooth, pus collects at the root tip in the jawbone. This pocket of pus (an abscess) damages the jawbone around the tooth. The infected pulp tends to cause swelling and pain. To resolve this issue, the tooth may be extracted or you may choose to have a root canal treatment procedure performed to eliminate the abscess and preserve your tooth.
If you choose the have root canal treatment, Dr. Chen will remove the diseased pulp, thoroughly clean, enlarge, and shape the root canals, and then permanently seal the canals. In some cases, a support post may be placed within the root canal to provide structural support. Finally, the pulp chamber will be sealed and the tooth’s crown will be restored. Most root canal treatments are completed in one to three office visits for residents in Lewiston, Auburn, and all of Androscoggin and Oxford County, Maine.
